The Lost Paintings

FEBRUARY 3, 2025

Finally, someone was interested in buying a couple of paintings from the series I once created of the cottages at the Hermitage Artist Retreat in Englewood. Funny enough, when I mentioned it to others, they said they had always been interested too. I painted them five years ago when the retreat was in lockdown and keeping an eye on the cottages while staying there.

In the early mornings and late nights, I would follow the intense light, discovering beautiful compositions of the Hermitage House, the Beach Cottage, the Whitney, and the Pump House.

They were small oil paintings, easy to fit in a box, and I remember placing them all in a simple wooden box. As soon as I returned to Asheville, I searched through storage, determined to find them, only to come up empty. Moving and floods are not the safest way to keep everything I own together.

As always, I tell myself, “As long as I’m alive and able to paint, I can create them again.” And now, I have a commission to paint four slightly larger versions of those lost paintings from a place I hold dear. Being in that magical setting, surrounded by artists and so close to the sea, holds a special place in my heart.

I’m grateful for the chance to immerse myself there once again while painting.
