Change is Possible

JANUARY 27, 2025

For the past week, I have been working with some practice clients to predict their future. I firmly believe that none of us are mere victims of our circumstances. While the environment may present challenges, perhaps that is a good thing. Sometimes, we create hardships just to experience the relief when they pass. Ultimately, it all contributes to our awareness.

“Not only are we all created, but we all create,” writes Dan Wakefield in his book Creating from the Spirit. We create our lives and then craft stories to explain ourselves to the world. In our creating, we ask questions, propose answers, and celebrate the human experience. Yet, we often take our days for granted, settling into routines and pushing through boredom for the sake of a paycheck. We prepare breakfast on autopilot, hop in the car, and move through the day in a state of semi-consciousness.

Our awareness shifts when we take a short vacation. A change of scenery, climate, and people can be surprisingly refreshing.

The key to living a conscious life is resisting routine and distraction. If we allow ourselves to drift into complacency, we become more susceptible to overeating, alcohol use, and other habits that dull our senses. The truth is, we often seek ways to break free from the well-worn grooves of daily life, yet change is difficult. A simple habit, like having a glass of wine with dinner, may seem harmless until we try to stop. Not only do we need willpower to resist the craving, but we also have to explain our decision to those around us: “Why do you want to change? Do you have a problem I don’t know about?” These questions can make us so uncomfortable that the urge to drink becomes even stronger. Willpower alone can only take us so far.

No matter how deeply we have sunk into numbing addictions, whether through alcohol, food, sleep, television, depression, or drugs, there is always a path back to clarity. When we reconnect with our deepest desires and gain true insight into our lives, we can begin to set meaningful change in motion.
