Modern Nomad
JANUARY 13, 2025
Not only by choice, but also through circumstance, I find myself in motion, searching for an inspiring place to work and call home. The word Modern Nomad comes to mind. The concept of nomadism isn’t new. Until about 12,000 years ago, humans lived nomadically, moving from place to place to survive. Today, it is less about following herds and more about searching Wi-Fi signals. This modern iteration is tied to economic freedom, remote work, and the ability to live from (almost) anywhere.
Doing some research, it turns out I am not alone. There are 35 million people who recently embraced this way of life, not just for the adventure but for the connection. There’s an innate human desire for community woven into this lifestyle. For me, the adventure began with the desire to find a subtropical climate. Do you know how miserable Amsterdam is in the winter? I landed in a charming ranch house near the beach in Florida. The temperature delivered, but the sense of community sucked. I did not own the house which meant I could leave any time. Hurricane Ian gave me the abrupt opportunity.
The world is opening up in ways that make nomadic life more accessible than ever. Digital nomad health insurance, co-living spaces, and flexible work policies are just the beginning. I am balancing conscious living, well being and remote work with personal growth, often while co-living and enjoying a connection to other people in a new way.
As a dual citizen of the USA and the Netherlands, I have the privilege of accessing many places without the added hurdle of visas. It’s an opportunity I don’t take for granted. To me it doesn’t mean endless movement; it is more about finding temporary roots in inspiring places. This lifestyle isn’t for everyone, and that’s okay. But an increasing number is trying to find their way in the world. In 2035, we could be looking at a billion people practicing new ways of living and working, reinventing what “home” means.
Today, I’m still finding my rhythm as a nomad. But one thing is clear: this lifestyle isn’t just about where I’m going; it’s about who I’m becoming along the way.
