Northern Light
JANUARY 6, 2025
Being in the Netherlands, I cannot help but notice the soft, low light that spreads over Amsterdam when the sun peeks through the clouds. This is the light that made Dutch painters famous. The weather, as usual for this time of year, is miserable; just above freezing, with rain, sleet, and the occasional fierce winds that come from the North.
Tourists wander the streets like zombies, perhaps high on something to rise above the harsh reality of the northern climate. I am wondering who else notices what I see; this pale light that reflects on the canals and gives the scenery an even glow.
After witnessing the devastation in America, where places I once loved have been transformed or lost, I find comfort in seeing these buildings endure. They have withstood wars, corrupt politicians, and foul weather. They have even been protected against the frequent floods that have shaped the Netherlands. Yet, I cannot help but ask myself, “Will they survive the greatest threat still to come?” With today’s sea levels already reaching the height of the fourth floor, I shudder to imagine what might happen if the barriers fail. Amsterdam will be lost.
Today, I will dream once more from Rembrandt’s studio on the fourth floor, gazing at the reflections on the water as he did 400 years ago. I long to feel, even if only for a moment, that the passing of time has no influence on the spirit.
