Rest
DECEMBER 16, 2024
Today, I am re-posting a blog by Simone Seol because it resonated with me.
How do you rest when you can’t really afford to take time off?
What a fantastic question. Here’s something to think about: You know how capitalism fetishizes production? Because of that, we’ve all come to understand rest as “non-production” by default. But I think that’s a bit simplistic—and maybe even distorting.
What if we went deeper than that? For rest to be truly restorative, it has to involve a shift in how we see the world. Rest is about declining a “seat at the table” with the oppressors. It’s about trusting yourself more than capitalism.
It’s about giving yourself permission—even if it’s just ten minutes—to soften and daydream, if that’s all the time you have. If that sounds profound, well, it’s because these words come from someone much wiser than me. That someone is Tricia Hersey.
Tricia Hersey is a multidisciplinary artist, theologian, escape artist, and founder of The Nap Ministry. She is the global pioneer and originator of the “rest as resistance” and “rest as reparations” frameworks. She collaborates with communities worldwide to create sacred spaces where the restorative power of rest can take hold. A native of Chicago, she believes in daydreaming, porch sitting, and poetry.
Daydreaming, meditation, and letting go of the desire to live a “big life”, instead making space for things that truly matter, have been on my mind a lot lately. I’ve had to unlearn the grind of constantly chasing fulfillment, only to realize that the true value of life lies in the stillness.
PS. Some of you wanted to know how to order my autobiography on Amazon, this is the ISBN number 9798875809200. It is called True Colors.
