Costa Rica

Dental care can significantly enhance your quality of life and happiness. By maintaining good oral health you will improve self-confidence while reducing pain and discomfort. Regular dental check-ups, cleanings, and proper oral hygiene practices help prevent dental issues, ensuring pain-free eating, speaking, and smiling.

My parents unanimously agreed that dental care was important—not just the choice of dentist, but also teaching us children not to eat sweets before bedtime and to brush regularly. Back then, dental care was affordable in the Netherlands. I still think it might be, though I’m not certain. In many parts of the United States, however, it’s not. This is evident in the number of poor individuals with missing teeth who are unable to chew properly, which affects their overall health and well-being.
Because the importance of oral health was instilled in me, I’ve now found myself in Costa Rica. But I’m not on vacation, visiting waterfalls, or lounging on beaches. Deep down, I’m angry—furious, even—that I had to travel so far just to afford dental care.

While researching for this article, I came across many justifications for why a dental bridge should cost $7,000. Some argue it’s due to the dentist’s experience (though mine was only 30 years old) or high overhead costs (I don’t need marble countertops in the bathroom for my teeth). Others blame inflated prices on insurance companies doubling costs so patients have to pay less out of pocket. Whatever the reasons, when I see wealthy dentists unsure of how to spend their excess money wisely while others go without teeth, something feels fundamentally wrong with this picture.

Investing in dental care is important and is ultimately fostering a happier, healthier life. Yet the cost of living, competition, and demand for dental services in certain areas often dictate prices. What about the cost of living for clients who need healthy teeth? It’s bad enough that many of us spend more than half our income on housing; now, the rest has to go toward maintaining our health?

In most cases this leaves little to no money for other joys, like buying art or investing in beautiful experiences. I once had a client who bought a tiny painting, explaining she needed to save most of her money for a $10,000 dental bill. It’s heartbreaking. How can people with average incomes ever afford this for dental work?
