Two things in life are the dreams of many people, the life of an artist and having a boat. Pursuing these dreams are unlike anything else. “Boats are Art Objects in themselves that take on a narrative and emotional personality” is what my mentor Robert Genn recited one day. That is why boat paintings appeal to a certain type of artist and collector. Stories will always come from the heart.
Boats represent a cosmic drift on the sea of life. They are independent, heroic, stubborn, plain and beautiful. They represent the potential for escape. For a romantic escape, nothing beats a boat. The only thing half as much worth doing as messing about in boats is to paint them.
I know people who spent their entire life dreaming about owning a boat. As soon as they had the money they bought an expensive keel yacht and set out to sea. Reality brought them back sooner than they had thought. Coral reefs are unforgiving and a fine to damage them is not even half as expensive as the damage to the boat. Did anybody tell them there are no traffic lights or roads follow?
It is much better to keep dreaming and buy a painting to keep the dream alive. I know this from experience.
