Old Florida

AUGUST 6, 2024

Jack London was a philosopher. In his book The Sea Wolf he contemplates the difference between him and his brother, both whaling captains. He says he actually is too intelligent for the job and rather was a scholar than hanging out with the rough crowd. His conclusion was that his seed did not land in fertile soil. In other words, he should have been born in a different situation.

I think it is the same with paintings. The paintings that did not sell aren’t bad paintings, they just never were seen by the right people. If you’re an avid painter, you know the struggle of arranging and rearranging everything on your walls to make room for new stuff. Sometimes you need to get rid of them altogether. The energy on old paintings is just that; old, it might be stale.

After roughly 30 years of painting I feel the need to make a shift. The new environment of North Carolina is inspiring me to make new work. To make room for my new series in Asheville I am announcing a sale during the end of Summer 2024. Hundreds of paintings at a value of thousands of dollars will be picked up from a storage in Florida. Not planning to throw them away I am looking at different options:

1- Completely painting over the old ones. This will give rich texture and the feeling of the old painting will stay.

2- Modifying them. Some works could be a lot better by just changing either color, or adding/distracting something.

3- Cutting them up and make collages with the material. Glue the pieces together in a different way.

4- Large-scale and high-quality canvases don’t come cheap, and deserve a second chance. I will have a ‘yard-sale’ and sell each unframed un-stretched one at a sharp discount.

5- Donate them. I reject this option. When people see my work as trash, it will become trash. They will throw it away the following year.

Through the sale I am allowing other people re-energize old paintings. Recycled, up-cycled and repurposed paintings make amazing décor. Every painting deserves a home. The oil paintings are un-stretched and un-framed, ready to be sent to your house. Count on 30-50% off, which makes pricing between $2000 and $300.Take advantage of it. If the prices are still too steep, negotiate them with me.

The sale takes place from September 12-13-14 and October 10-11-12, from 11-4 pm, 357 Depot Street, Asheville NC 28801 or on-line www.jacobinao.com

The Sea Series are in Black Mountain. Gorgeous J-class sailboats in enchanted settings are also for sale at Thurston Woodworking store, Richard A. Thurston, 204 Sutton Avenue, Black Mountain, NC 28711, 828-458-2783
